As far as ARAU is concerned, a city is by definition sustainable. Its population density, and in particular, the sharing of buildings, mean that energy losses are avoided. The mixture of functions in the same area reduces the need to travel and, therefore, for a transport infrastructure. As much as the costs of urban sprawl are known, the benefits of city life remain hidden. It is this view of a city as a sustainable energy zone that has inspired us to create a tour which will show participants concrete initiatives as part of energy-efficiency projects, be they aiming to reduce a building’s energy requirements (by improving insulation and installing more efficient energy systems) and aiming to integrate energy from renewable sources into traditionally-sourced energy supplies. The tour is the result of a co-operation between ARAU and APERe (the Association for Promoting Renewable Energy). This tour includes a tour of the Renewable Energy house (EREC / European Renewable Energy Council).
