The sleepy farming village of Schaerbeek was completely transformed in the early years of the twentieth century by an innovative town council who laid out the prestigious avenue Louis Bertrand to herald new, tree-filled residential districts for the city’s burgeoning middle classes, many of whom employed the period’s best architects to design their new homes. Victor Horta, Gustave Strauven, François Hemelsoet and Henri Jacobs were just four of the architects who reinvented family houses, apartment buildings and educational buildings in the Art Nouveau style.
